Halloween Happenings

Being that this is my first year living somewhere that I will actually have trick-or-treaters, I am extremely excited for Halloween tomorrow. My candy basket is packed (too) full, and I am eager to see all the kiddos in their costumes!

My sister was struggling to come up with an idea for my nephew's costume this year, so I took some time to browse DIY kid's costumes on Pinterest.  Let me tell you, there are some clever parents out there! My favorite costumes were this scarecrow, this gumball machine, and this garden gnome. Seriously, how cute are they?! Since my nephew is currently obsessed with Despicable Me (these movies and Mickey Mouse Club are the only things he watches on TV), my sister opted to turn him into a minion this year for Halloween. I can't wait to see how cute he looks as a minion!

On another note, I have been making it a point to test out as many seasonal beers as I can this fall.  So, I have been taking full advantage of "Halloween week" as an excuse to drink some beer (can't pass up a good excuse to drink beer, right?!). I think my top three pumpkin beers so far are O'Fallon Pumpkin Beer, Jack-O Traveler, and Schlafly Pumpkin Ale. I can't wait to pop one open tomorrow while waiting for our trick-or-treaters!

Some final Halloween thoughts:

Happy Halloween, all!

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

#TBT:: Halloween Costumes

It's been a few years since I have dressed up for Halloween, but I thought it would be fun to do a throwback post of some of my college/post college costumes. Sometimes I wonder what I was thinking in college. :)

Freshman Year:: Witch - I did forget to bring my hat with me to the Halloween party I attended though, so I was asked ALL night what I was supposed to be. #Fail

Sophomore Year:: Sailor - This outfit was questionable.
  • My friends and I also volunteered at a local haunted house that year, which is where the white painted face and sword comes into the mix. I'm pretty sure I was the least "scary" scary person in the whole haunted house.
Junior Year:: Tool - Did you ever watch the show Tool Academy on VH1? Well, my roommates and I thought it was hilarious so we decided to dress up as Tools for Halloween.

Senior Year:: Homecoming fell on Halloween my senior year of college, so we skipped the costumes and sported our best SEMO gear.

Year One Post College:: Mario - Probably my favorite costume. My friend was the Luigi to my Mario.

This year, I think I will just keep it low key and stick with this outfit I posted earlier in the week.  What are you dressing up as?

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

Sister Trip to D.C.

My cousin, sister, and me at the river front in Georgetown.
My sister and I had the best time visiting my cousin in Washington D.C. this past weekend! We have never attempted a sisters' trip before, and our first one was definitely a success! I loved spending time with her and my cousin while exploring a new city. It will definitely have to become a regular event. I'm already thinking of future destinations for us!

Here's a brief recap of our adventure::

Saturday, my sister and I met early in the morning to catch our flight to D.C.. We arrived around lunch time and my cousin and her boyfriend picked us up at the airport. We were pretty hungry so we headed to District ChopHouse and Brewery to grab lunch. Of course I couldn't go to a brewery and not get a beer, so I also tested out one of their handcrafted lagers. Since my sister is currently pregnant (with my 2nd nephew!), she had to spend the whole trip drinking water while my cousin and I enjoyed several ice cold brews. Sorry, Dani!

After lunch, we headed to the National Portrait Gallery, where there were tons of restored portraits of famous Americans. My favorite were the portraits of our past Presidents. After we finished, we headed to get a peek of the white house. Unfortunately, the roads were blocked off, and they weren't allowing people to get too close, but we did get a good view and even saw some snipers on the roof! We then headed back to my cousin's apartment to get freshened up before dinner. We had dinner and then had a couple more beers at another local brewery before calling it a night.

Isn't my sister the cutest little pregnant lady?!
If you look closely, you can see people on the roof!

It was raining Sunday morning and we were feeling pretty lazy so my cousin made us breakfast and we just lounged around the apartment all morning. Then, in the afternoon, we headed out to explore Georgetown. It is such a cute area! There is tons of shopping, and the river front is beautiful.

Georgetown was so cute

Rachel and I at the Georgetown river front

We grabbed Mexican food for dinner and then went to look at some of the memorials at night. We visited the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials and also had an excellent view of the Washington Monument. I loved seeing these landmarks at night because not only were they incredibly beautiful all lit up, but there also weren't a ton of people visiting while we were there.

Dani and I in front of the Washington Monument

The Jefferson Memorial and beautiful full moon.

Rachel and I hanging out with George Mason

View of the Lincoln Memorial

Monday morning we woke up and went to grab brunch and explore the city a little more. We visited the Washington National Cathedral (which was stunning) and then snacked on a little gelato before heading to the airport to catch our 3:15 flight home.

Seriously, how gorgeous is this cathedral?

This picture gives you a glimpse at how huge the cathedral is

I can't wait to see where our next sister trip takes us!

Emily Ann

Halloween Week Celebrations

How cute is this jack-o-lantern iron-on t-shirt?! I paired it with my Minnie Scarf from Three Sheep Shack for a fun, work-friendly, Halloween look. What do you have planned for your Halloween week work attire?

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

P.S. Stay tuned for a re-cap of my trip to Washington D.C. tomorrow!

Fall Style: Floral Kimono

One of my favorite fall looks was a floral kimono paired with booties. Since the weather in STL has been near 80 this week, I decided to take advantage of putting my floral kimono to use one last time before the weather becomes too cool. Here's a peek at how I re-created one of my favorite looks from The Red Closet Diary:

Happy 100 + Liebster Award

Guys, this is my 100th blog post!! Whoa! How did that happen so quickly? You know what else? My blog was just nominated for the Liebster Award, and I couldn't be more honored!

I never knew how much I would love the world of blogging when I first started Sincerely, Emily Ann six months ago, but it has quickly become a huge part of my life. I love capturing all of my day-to-day adventures and personal style, and hope that I can inspire others the same way that I have been inspired by fellow bloggers.

And now, on to the Liebster Award (I still can't believe Sincerely, Emily Ann was nominated!):

The Liebster Award is given to newbie bloggers by other bloggers as a way to support and promote each other in growing our blogs! How cool, right!?
A huge thanks to Nicole from Knot Blushing for my nomination. If you haven't been following her blog, you need to be! I love her trendy style and fun hair tutorials. Be sure to follow her on Instagram as well!
The Rules:
1. Post your award to your blog.
2. Answer the questions that you were given from the person who nominated you.
3. Nominate a few new bloggers you’ve discovered.
4. Create 10 new questions for the nominees.
5. Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog.
Answering Nicole's Questions:
1. What inspired you to start your blog?
The inspiration to start SEA came from other bloggers. More specifically, one of my good friends who blogged was always showing me cute outfit ideas, new places she wanted explore, and fun crafts she wanted to try. She would always say that she found the idea on a blog that she follows. Eventually, I got curious and started following some of her favorite bloggers. It quickly escalated from there. Before I knew it, I was obsessed with looking at posts on BlogLovin' and eventually got the nerve to give my own blog a shot. I had no idea where to start, but knew that I wanted to capture my personal style, random journeys, and everything else in-between, all while inspiring others to do the same. And here I am, 100 posts later, with a blog I never knew I would love so much.

2. How do you manage your time? How do you make time in your busy schedule for blogging?
The option to "schedule" your blog posts has become a total life saver for me. There is no way I'd have time to write a new blog every day, so I've found that scheduling them works best for me. I often knock out the majority of my posts for the week in one sitting. I also have a ton of drafts going at any given point in time. I like to capture my ideas when they are fresh in my mind without having to worry about completing the entire post right away. So, I throw my ideas in a draft, and this gives me time to continue to think on how I want the post to turn out before actually putting it all together.
3. Favorite place to be- GO!
This one is easy. My hometown. When I graduated high school I couldn't wait to get away from that small town. I moved four hours away to go to college. After college, I still didn't appreciate all that my hometown had to offer, and was eager to start my career in St. Louis. As I've gotten older, I've really learned to appreciate "home". That small town that I was running away from has suddenly become my favorite place in the world. There is nothing better than going home and hanging out on the farm with my family. I mean have you seen my nephew?! He is the cutest guy around (and my sister has another one on the way, too!).
4. What’s your favorite social media to promote your blog and why?
I actually didn't have any social media promoting my blog until a couple weeks ago when I finally started an Instagram account. For a while, I just wanted to capture my day-to-day thoughts, style, and activities for myself, and if others found my blog and liked what I had posted, then that was just a perk. Now that I have grown into my blog a little more and know what direction I want to go, I am more comfortable with promoting it on social media. I have been obsessed with my Instagram account and have probably been posting a little too much, but every time I look at it I just get so excited and want to add something new!
5. If you could have dinner with any one person of your choosing, who would it be and why?
Well this is a tough one. I feel like I should give some really deep, intellectual answer like "Oprah so I can learn the secrets of how she built her empire," but instead I'm just going to go with Ryan Gosling. I mean come on..talk about a total babe!
6. Coffee or tea?
Honestly, I'm just not a fan of either one. I know...what is wrong with me?!  Everyone tells me I'll become a coffee lover as I get older, but I just don't see it happening. I don't even like the smell! Give me a glass of water instead, please.
7. What blogger has inspired you the most?
Aside from my friend who I mentioned earlier, Lauren Elizabeth is probably the blogger that has inspired me the most. I have been obsessed with her blog since I first discovered it a year or two ago. For a while, I would try to copy every one of her outfits! She is just always so darn cute and has the best style! #BlogGoals
8. Nerd or Prep?
I'll go with prep, although I believe in a healthy mixture of both!
9. Do you have any distractions while blogging, if so, what is it?
I think it's actually the opposite for me. Blogging is my distraction. After finishing up a project at work, I'll be sitting in my office and something will pop into my head and before I know it I'm starting on a blog draft before moving on to my next project. Or, I'll be out and about doing something, and I'll find myself suddenly looking for the perfect picture to capture for the blog or Instagram.
10. Favorite shoes?
Although I am currently loving the booties trend, I'm going to have to say my favorite pair of shoes is my cowboy boots. I love throwing them on literally every chance I get.
11. BONUS: What house? Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin?
What would you say if I told you I had to Google these words to even know what this question was asking?! I honestly have never read a Harry Potter book or watched the movies, which is totally surprising because I love to read! Guess I should add them to my reading list. :)
MY NOMINATIONS:
Jess from Silex In the City
Megan from Linens and Leggings
Meagan from All the Joys Blog
My Questions for the Nominees:

1. What inspired you to start your blog?
2. What is your favorite fall trend?
3. Name three artists/bands that would make up your dream concert.
4. If you had to choose one store to spend $5,000 at, what store would it be?
5. What blogger has inspired you the most?
6. Favorite TV show of all time?
7. What are your top three book recommendations?
8. What do you love most about where you live?
9. What is your ultimate travel destination?
10. What would be your perfect fall day? What activities would it include?

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

#3ToWear:: V.2

Another week, another #3ToWear challenge down! If you are new to the challenge, check out my post from last week to learn more, and head over to Instagram to see the three pieces that I chose to work into my wardrobe for the week.

I decided to pair my boots with a flannel from Target that I have been loving lately! For the grey split-back top, I chose to add one of my favorite statement necklaces to dress things up a bit. Lastly, my Three Sheep Shack scarf looked great with my cowboy boots, and was perfect for a fall day at the pumpkin patch!

This week's items include one of my favorite tanks, a buffalo plaid button up, and a pair of running shoes that I got for my birthday! Stay tuned for updates on Instagram and be sure to hop back over to the blog next week to see how I incorporate them into my outfit rotation this week!

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

Weekend Recap:: Fall Festivities

The past weekend was spent soaking up the beautiful fall weather. Saturday began with a one mile fun walk to support Second Wind Lung Transplant Association. The walk was followed up by an afternoon at the Cedar Lakes Winery to celebrate Jessie's birthday. The weather was a little cool, but we bundled up, sipped on our drinks, and enjoyed live music and great company.

On Sunday, a couple of us joined my friend and her daughter as they explored a local pumpkin patch. We took a hayride, enjoyed kettle corn, and Sophia even took a pony ride! It was a perfect way to end an October weekend.

I hope you all had a great fall weekend too! Cheers to another Monday at the office!

Weekly Bits:: 21

Sipped:: Sam Adams Harvest Pumpkin Ale
  • I've been branching out and trying a lot of craft beer lately. This past week, a friend and I enjoyed a couple of these beers while testing out my new front porch rocking chairs  It wasn't my favorite pumpkin beer of the season, but we definitely enjoyed it!
Read:: Eight Hundred Grapes by Laura Dave
  • This has been on my list for a while and I'm glad I finally got started on it this week. I have heard great reviews of this book, and let me tell you, they are accurate! I only have a couple chapters left and am eager to see how it all plays out.
Purchased:: Concert Tickets
  • Can we just take a second to talk about all of the great country concerts in STL this fall?! Brett Eldredge, Thomas Rhett, Sam Hunt, Tyler Farr, Charles Kelley, Eli Young Band....the list is endless! Tickets have already been purchased for Brett Eldredge/Thomas Rhett in November and Sam Hunt/Tyler Farr in December, and I can't wait to see their performances!
Excited:: To celebrate Jess' birthday!
  • We are headed to the winery on Saturday to celebrate and I am beyond excited! I'm personally not much of a wine drinker (I'd rather sip on a few beers instead), but I am in love with the idea of going to wineries. Sitting outside and enjoying a beautiful view with great friends and family is hard to beat. Last year we had the best time at Cedar Lake Cellars celebrating the birthday girl, and I can't wait to see what this year's trip brings!
Sincerely,

Emily Ann

P.S. This is a snapshot of our little farm house that I took while on my evening jog last night. Ever since moving back to my country roots, I am constantly reminded of how vibrant and beautiful the world can be.

Recent Reads:: v.3

The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty
  • After finishing Big Little Lies, I couldn't wait to dive into this book. I'll admit, it took me a while to get into this one. There were so many characters and I didn't like how long it took to figure out how they were all connected. However, once I found out what the husband's secret actually was, I had a hard time putting the book down! The secret is huge, and leaves you wanting to know more. I loved the epilogue at the end too, so if you read this book be sure not to skip that part! I recommend this book.
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
  • This book had me hooked from the start! The main character is an alcoholic who feels she has zero self worth. She becomes entangled in a murder investigation after witnessing something on her daily train commute. The way she pieces together her "drunken" memories to ultimately solve the murder case kept me turning the pages. I had several different theories on how this book would end and they were all wrong! I am eager to see how this book is adapted into a movie next year. I recommend this book.
Oh! You Pretty Things by Shanna Mahin
  • Honestly, I just couldn't get into this book. I made it about halfway through and gave up. I can't pinpoint exactly what I didn't like about it, but it just wasn't my kind of book. Since I have a list of about 30 books that I want to read right now, I figured I wouldn't waste my time finishing one that I wasn't really enjoying. Maybe someday I'll give it another shot. I don't recommend this book.
The Good Girl
  • I listened to this one on audio during my daily commute and really enjoyed it. I found myself listening to it while getting ready in the mornings, during my lunch breaks, and on evening strolls in the park. I was hooked from the first chapter and needed to know what happened. Mia was abducted by a guy she met in a bar. When she returns, she is not the same person. She now goes by Chloe and has no memory of what happened. The story works backwards to solve the mystery of what happened, and I can tell you it's a good one! I definitely recommend this book.

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

#3ToWear:: v.1

With every new season, I find myself wanting to purchase a whole new wardrobe rather than picking from the closet full of good stuff that I already own. So, along with Jess from Silex in the City, we have decided to do a weekly challenge, picking three pieces from our current closet to work into our outfit rotation for the week. We have dubbed this challenge #3ToWear and would love for you to join in this fall! Just use the hashtag #3ToWear on Instagram to tag us!

Week 1 of the challenge included an old favorite camo tee from J. Crew Factory, new peep toe booties from Kohl's, and a navy sweater from Loft that didn't make it into any outfit rotations last fall/winter. Here is how I ended up styling all three pieces:

My #3ToWear picks for week 2 include a new scarf from Three Sheep Shack, a split-back top from American Eagle, and some fun boots that are a few years old (I can't remember where they are from). Follow me on Instagram or check the blog next week to see how I style them!

Emily Ann

#ThreeSheepShack

Not too long ago, I mentioned that my friend and her mom have an Etsy shop called Three Sheep Shack where they sell all sorts of neat crochet items. All of their pieces are handmade on their sheep farm in rural Missouri.

In honor of their one year anniversary, I thought I'd share with you some of my favorite items from the shop! There are so many great pieces available that it's hard for me to pick just one favorite. If I had to narrow it down I'd say my top two are the Dutchess Scarf and the Erika Scarf.  I seriously cannot wait to wear all of these pieces this fall and I'm eager to see what new ones become available.

Three Sheep Shack also offers other fun items like afghans, hand warmers, runners, and koozies so be sure to check out the shop on Etsy!

Weekly Bits:: 20

Created:: Instagram
  • Guys, I finally created an Instagram account for the blog this week and I am loving it! I've been so excited that I may have gone a little crazy with the posting the last few days. Be sure to head on over to IG and follow me!
Started:: #3ToWear
  • At the start of every new season, I find myself wanting to buy a whole new wardrobe. Well, not this fall! Jess and I are challenging ourselves to pick 3 items from our closet each week to work into our outfit rotation. We have deemed this project #3ToWear. I'll be sure to do a post next week to officially kick off the project, but in the meantime, you can check out my 3 closet items for this week over on Instagram. Stay tuned to see how I style them!
Dined::  Standard Brewing Co.
  • I've been itching to try this brewery ever since it opened earlier this year. It is just a hop, skip, and a jump away from my work so my co-worker and I headed over for happy hour last night and boy am I glad we did. You really can't go wrong with pizza, beer, and good friends.
Purchased:: Camo Jacket
  • I don't know about you but I love me some camo! I saw this jacket at Express and immediately knew that it would be right at home in my wardrobe. Since I had a great coupon and some Express Next Rewards, I decided it was time to pull the trigger. Now, if only it would stop being 80 degrees in St. Louis....
Watched:: Blindspot
  • This show wasn't initially on my radar this fall, but Michael mentioned that it looked interesting and he wanted to watch it. Since there aren't a ton of shows that we agree on, I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised by how much I liked it and am glad we have found another show that we can enjoy together.
Sincerely,

Emily Ann

Life Lately

  • #NoFilter - I couldn't pass up the opportunity to capture this view at our house a couple weeks ago. Can you believe how blue the sky is?! It was a beautiful evening.

  • I was lucky enough to take this handsome guy as my date for a friend's wedding last weekend. We had a great time! I got this dress from Old Navy recently for $10! Such a steal! The booties were only $25 at Target, too!

  • I have some seriously talented friends and family! My mom made me these decorative pumpkins last fall and I couldn't wait to bring them back out this year! My friend also made this awesome fall print for me. I'm trying to convince him to create an Etsy account to sell some of his prints - "In all things, give thanks."

  • This is one of the snapshots from our fishing adventure that I mentioned last week. We had a great time and caught about 30 fish! Clearly, I was the better fisherman (wink, wink).

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

Stitch Fix:: V.3

It's that time again! My quarterly Stitch Fix has arrived. I came home to this pretty box on my doorstep earlier this week and couldn't wait to see what was inside!

For those of you who don't know what Stitch Fix is, it's a personal styling service that shops for you and sends 5 items of clothing or accessories to your door, either monthly or on a date of your choosing. You can read a full review of my first two Stitch Fix deliveries here.

Here's a peek at what I received in my fall box::

RD Style Padma Dress (Shoes are from Kohl's)
  • I LOVED this dress. It was such a perfect fit and style. Unfortunately, I just purchased a black dress not too long ago, and didn't feel I needed two little black dresses so I hesitantly returned this one. I am already regretting that decision!

Papermoon Violeta 3/4 Sleeve Blouse
Just Black Jimmy Skinny Jeans
(Shoes are from Kohl's)
  • Everything about the Papermoon blouse is perfect. There is a double scalloped edge and an adorable cutout in the back. I had no hesitation keeping this top, and can't wait to get some wear out of it! I really liked these jeans too, but I just have too many pairs of jeans already, so I didn't keep them. The style and wash was on point though! I'll definitely keep the Just Black brand in mind next time I'm on the hunt for a good pair of jeans.

Urban Expressions Elisha Zipper Accent Structured Satchel
  • This purse just wasn't really my style. I liked the shape of it and that it could be converted to a cross body, but the color and details just weren't up my alley. I returned it as well.

Market & Spruce Dino Open Cardigan
  • When I first took this cardigan out of the box, I really liked it and was sure it was a keeper. Unfortunately, after trying it on, it just wasn't a good fit for me. It was pretty big and baggy which I know is the style, but it just didn't work on me so I didn't keep it.

My next fix is scheduled for late December. Can't wait to see what winter items my stylist picks out for me!

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

Sunday Style:: Fall Boots

The highs in STL this week are in the upper 60's which means fall is in full swing! I feel like I have a pretty solid boot lineup this year and am eager to break them out! Here's a peek at what has been hiding in my closet::

Weekly Bits:: 19

Baked:: Pumpkin Bread
  • I knocked this item off of my fall to-do list this week. For my first attempt at baking bread, I'd say it turned out pretty good! My mom told me to add cinnamon to the recipe next time so I'm eager to make it again with that addition.
Watched:: Chicago PD
  • I have been hooked on this Chicago Fire spin-off ever since it premiered last year. Between the two shows, PD is actually my favorite and the season 3 premiere did not disappoint!
Wore:: Crochet Infinity Scarf
  • My friend and her mom started an Etsy shop called Three Sheep Shack about a year ago and they sell all kinds of neat crochet items. I have a scarf, boot cuffs, and koozie - all of which I love! I also have this infinity scarf in maroon in the works. Hop on over and check them out!
Listened:: The Good Girl by Mary Kubica
  • This is the latest audio book I've been listening to and let me tell you, I am hooked! Stay tuned for my review on it next week!
Went:: Fishing!
  • Michael's family has a special private lake where they like to go fishing. I was always told "no girls allowed", but I lucked out this past week and got invited to go with him and his dad. It was such a beautiful lake. The water was so clear that you could see the fish swim up and snatch your bait. We caught close to 30 fish in just a couple of hours!

Sincerely,

Emily Ann

P.S. I'm in love with this watercolor from worDSMITHstudios' Etsy shop.
